This excellent wildlife adventure explores the forest trails and wilderness of the Ratnapura District by foot or bike. The adventure begins with a leisurely bike ride across the marshlands, close to Colombo, during this stretch you will get the chance to view some of Sri Lanka’s large and colourful waterfowl.

Transferring to lunch at the Kalavati Estate and Hotel, renown for its herbal baths and massage treatment. The oils are derived from the many exotic plants grown within the grounds. The following days cycle ride takes us to the Sinharaja, Sri Lankas only remaining primeval rainforest, with its own unique plant, animal and birdlife. We spend the night at the lodge of the renowned rainforest ecologist Martin Wijesinghe. Rising early the next morning to trek up to the Moulawella high point for a fine aerial view of the unbroken tree canopy.

The ancient city region

What better way can there be to view the majestic ruins and vibrant countryside of the ancient city region, than touring by bike? You will see much more, experiencing first hand, natural wonders like the stunning jungle covered Kalunduwa Hills, here shady canopies conceal an old kings route, which links the spectacular 5th century rock fortress of Sigiriya to Polunaruwa.

Riding around the vast ruins of the 11th century, you realise how great the kingdom was, with its irrigation canals and huge reservoirs, the largest known as the ‘Sea of Parakrama’. This serene waterscape is a perfect place for our picnic lunch stop. The tour is suitable for all types of rider as the flat terrain and short distances can be ridden at a leisurely pace.

Island traverse and south coast explorer

The very best of our Sri Lanka mountain bike adventures. An exciting mixture of tea estate tracks and scenic dirt roads allows you to traverse the island and experience this tropical paradise first hand.

We visit the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya and ride along an old kings route to the ancient ruined city of Polunaruwa. Riding around the vast ruins of the 11th century, you realise how great the kingdom was, with its irrigation canals and huge reservoirs, the largest known as the ‘Sea of Parakrama.

Next we ride to Kandy the spiritual and mountain biking capital of the hill country. The route takes us to Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains, the high grassy plateau and ridge forest that is often shrouded in mist. we may see the the shy bear monkey as we descend through eerie misty jungle to Kitulgala.

Spending the last two days at one of the idyllic beaches along the stunning palm fringe coast. We stay the nights in a mixture of old colonial rest houses and comfortable hotels. Most of the hotels used on route are 3 star. Some with swimming pools to chill out in after another great ride. All have been chosen for their biker friendly attitude, with well stocked bars and scenic locations.

The lush tea estates of the hill country

There is no better part of Sri Lanka more suited to mountain biking than the lush tea estates of the hill country. Criss-crossed by dirt tracks which link the old colonial plantations to the picturesque hill stations of a bygone era, this is an unforgettable experience.

Starting in Kandy we traverse the spectacular Knuckles mountain, its a great descent and almost 100% downhill! We stop on route for lunch at the scenic Pitawela water falls, before transferring to Nuwara Eliya the highest and most favoured of the hill stations during the British colonial times. Our route takes us to Horton Plains, the high grassy plateau and ridge forest that is often shrouded in mist. We may see the shy bear monkey as we descend through eerie misty jungle to Hatton where we visit a tea factory and sample the refreshing local brew.
